Hunt with falcons in Europe in the first centuries

In western Europe the hunt began with falcons in 6. Jhd. in the Germanic area

…a short history of the origins of the falconry:

Falcon hunt in the Arab area Falconry is a very old manner of hunting – about 4000 years ago it came into being in Asia – therefore it is much older than using firearms. Originally man actually used birds of prey for so-called hawking. Later these animals played an important role in the aristocracy: well-trained, precious hierofalcons were given to Kings as presents to form strategic important friendships and even to avoid wars.
In the 13th century the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen produced his remarkable work: "De arte venandi cum avibus" ("The art of hunting with birds"). Even today this book is the standard work for the modern falconer.
Nowadays falconries try to make the biology and the art of being of birds of prey accessible to the people by presentations and performances. Even the hawking is practiced as ever.

Probably the most important assignment of the falconers are: doing the research work of birds of prey and, of course, the breeding of these threatened species. Some falconries (such as “OÖ Jagdfalkenhof, Michael Geiger, too) are involved in projects of different nature conservation organizations for adaptions for survival of birds of prey.
