Bird breed

We breed for the European and also for the Arab area.

The "OÖ Jagdfalkenhof" produces about 10 different species of falcons in pure forms and Gyr-hybrids as well as Golden Eagles, Tawny Eagles, Red Kites, Black Kites, Griffon Vultures, Turkey vultures and Little Owls.

The courtship of the breeding-pairs starts in January. The tiercel makes food passing to the female; both of them dig a so-called "eyrie-hollow" – falcons do not build a nest, they breed in niches in the rockface on gravel in a hollow. In March or April the birds lay their eggs: falcons lay 4, eagles 1-3 and vultures 1-2 eggs.
After a breeding-period of 31 days the falcon-chicks hatch. With eagles it takes about 45 and with vultures up to 55 days.
During this time the tiercel is responsible for the procurement of the food for himself and his incubating female. Both participate in the rearing of the chicks.
After nearly nine weeks the young falcons have grown up and ready feathered and do their first attempt at flying. With big birds of prey it takes a bit longer: for example a Golden Eagle needs about 90 days until he is fully fledged.
Then the most important work for us falconers begins: the young birds must be carried on the gloved fist and trained – according to the desires of our customers – for the hunting in Europe and the Arabian Emirates as well as for presentations in different falconries.

Our motto:
Quality, not quantity!

We will, of course, offer young birds of 2008 from our own breeding for sale. For any information or orders please contact us:   zucht@falknerei-geiger.at

You can even buy some falconry-equipment directly from us (such as gloves, lures, jesses, bags, etc.)!
